Question:
I am an ESL teacher in a small community in Nevada. I am stuck on how to
teach the writing process to my students. The speaking and reading ability
is about on the 2/3 grade level. How does one teach the basic of writing
without insulting the students, they are in high school. Most of the
materials for teaching beginnign writing are at the 1st grade level,
Answer:
I am a fifth grade teacher, but I work with ESL students. For writing, I don't
use a lot of materials. The Writing Process in English is not different from
the same in Spanish. You want the writing to be meaningful to the student, so
you might begin with letters: letters to the president or to local
administrators or legislators regarding some issue that would interest your
students. There's no reason for the process to be youngish, though the English
vocabulary might not be sophisticated. Writing is something to work on after
he students are fairly strong in the oral departmet of their second language.
I imagine that in high school you are feeling the need to push up the process,
but that may not be the best aproach, depending upon the students and their
time in an ESL program.
