Question:
I'm studying to be English teacher. In the past I teached elemantary
school's children as a tutor. At that time they asked me why they learn
English. I'm confused about this question. But I didn't know what I say.
So I just answered them that English is very important to communicate with
foreigners. They looked like suspicious expression. Then they asked me
again. "Is it because my country isn't strong than U.S.A." I thought that
I didn't answer them contentedly. If you are in this situation, what do
you say?
Answer:
Why Study English ?
Well for Koreans, it seems a lot of emphasis is put on it for jobs, at
least in the corporate and government envirnoment. So knowing English
can help get you a better job,
This is certaintly the case with a friend of mine who nows works for a
foreign company in Seoul with much better working coditions.
1. It is the language of Business - not just Americians.
and of pilots.
2. You will often see foreigners conversing in the only shared
language they know - English ... well at least here in Australia.
3. Education - Koreans seem to place a lot of emphasis on English for
getting into Universities, although they seem to keep changing the
entrance requirements every year ... so who knows ?
4. It is better then Konglish :-) .. go Fighting ! Korea
5. By learning another language, you becoming more farmilar with your
own culture and language
why ?
When I started reading about Korea I realised that I did not know how
things work in my own country. So by looking at another culture and
language you often have to reexamine your own culture in the context
of another.
This I think makes people more tolerant of others and helps get rid of
stereotypes.
Unfortunally for students in Korean schools, I don't think they will
get the full benifit of learning English b/c there is not enough
emphasis on conversational English.
I suspect it is just anther subject that must be learnt to get into
University.
