Question:
I've tried 'Teach yourself Spanish', which has made me realise I would
benefit from a book which starts with simple sentences, but explains every
detail of them. I haven't the best memory for lists of stuff. I remember
reasons why things are so, better than memorising lists. I understand that
some things are a certain way, 'because they just are', and I'll just have
to memorise it. I also understand that there are lots and lots of nouns,
verbs et etc to commit to memory. But a book with good explanations would be
better for me.
Looking at the 'Teach yourself' book frustrates me, because there may be one
part of a sentence that isn't explained for a few chapters, or is mentioned
once hidden away in the text.
Also, the 'Teach Yourself' book expects you to know what a 'preposition',
'pronoun' etc etc is. Despite acheiving respectable O'Level Englisg results,
this stuff just wasn't taught in teh 80's, so a little more explanation here
would be useful too. My written English is very much based on whether
something sounds correct. This comes from 30 years of usage. As I haven't
got that luxury in Spanish, I need those explanations.
Answer:
I am sorry, but today, I don't know of a good Spanish grammAr book for a
beginner. My grammar book for Spanish 1, 2, and 3 was titled, "Modern
Spanish". I don't recall the author, but it was used at the university-
level several years ago.
I write to you to suggest that you might want to purchase a good English
grammAr book as well, since you say that you need an introduction or a
review of English grammar. You won't find both in one book.
