Question:
Im from Sweden, and Ive been a year in Wyoming, US
as an exchange-student. So I should be pretty good at English, right?
Well, I am. Im the best one in my class. The problem is that I cant
show it. Im so damn scared of talking English that I cant even say
something in English to my best friend, or my mom. Everytime my
English-teacher asks me to read something, I refuse. I never answer
any questions, or say anything at all in English-class.
Answer:
Do you have a problem speaking in front of the class in other subjects, or
is it limited to English?
If you have a general problem, then I may be able to offer some help, as I
was able completely to cure a crippling stage fright.
If the problem is limited to English, then a good next step would be to try
to figure out why it is English per se that you are afraid of. Obviously,
you can write English very well, as you are doing here. Is there a
specific event that you experienced when speaking English that would tend
to make you phobic of doing so again? Sometimes for nameless fears it is
possible to find out what you are really afraid of when you are in a very
relaxed state. I have a short essay on doing this, which I can send you.
It may also be that you have an anxiety disorder. There's no shame in
this; I have one and am being treated for it. There are some effective
treatments out there, involving either counselling or medication.
