Question:
I'm curious as to what people think - for those who speak more than one
langauge, or are learning a new langauge, what effect does this have in
terms of self-esteem?
Right now, I'm two months into an intensive, and I mean *intensive*
introductory Spanish language course. So far, we have covered almost
200 pages worth of material, and I know the basic grammatical forms -
articles, nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, prepositions, and adverbs
as well as enough vocab to do carry on a basic conversation. Example:
- Hola senor, habla espanol, usted? Hablo espanol, y quiero apprender
mas. Soy de Vancouver, y estudio muchos clases - mi clase de espanol
es la mejor. Adios, tengo que tomar un autobus.
The thing I like a lot about it is that I have a knack for languages
and grammar, particularly with grammatical structure, so this makes
learning the initial stages of it quite fun.
Eventually, I hope to travel overseas to places like Spain, Mexcio,
Argentina, and others where Spanish is spoken, however I'm having a
tough time finding out information (ahh procrastination) but the good
news is that I get along great with my Spanish prof, and she's a great
person to talk to with regards to this kind of stuff.
But what I'm wondering is, for those who have had the opportunity to
speak a new language, either in travelling, or for work, or just going
to a new place - how did it help your self-esteem? Was it a fun
challenge that helped you grow as a person? What difficulties were
there? Would this be recommended as a good way to overcome shyness? I
think in future, this will definitely be something I'll try.
Answer:
I don't know about this but I'm going to try to pick up a couple of different
languages. Even if to know a few words at first from the different languages.
I'm also thinking about picking Japanese back up. That was an interesting
language!!
But I need to know some of Spanish and Polish. There are a lot of Spanish and
Polish people speaking here. And I work in a hospital...I think it'll be nice
for both of us (me and the patient) to know at least a couple of terms.
I also want to pick up Italian because there are a lot of Italian speaking here
too. But I'm not going to overwhelm myself and I'll start off with
Spanish-since there appears to be more speaking spanish than the others.
And I do plan on traveling the world. I wonder if it's possible to pick up like
8 different languages? Probably not intense of them but...?!? You think?
Spanish, Polish, Italian, Japanese (why not? I already know the beginners),
German (took German in the 4th grade), Swedish, etc...
