Question:
Any suggestions on the best method for learning a foreign language? I
sometimes see ads in magazines with completely unrealistic "guarantees" such
as "speak French fluently in 30 days."
Answer:
Learn the language. Seriously, it depends on what you want. If
you are willing with a vocabulary that will allow you to ask directions
(but not necessarily understand tem), or order a cup of coffee, a glass of
wine, or soup & sandwiches, then most of the 30-day Wonder Programs will
be adequate. If you wish a more comprehensove ability, acrash course a la
Berlitz will help you with the tourist-vocabulary, and can give you a
moderate to good ability to understand responces, and even a small
chit-caht vocabulary. If you really want to learn a language - grammar,
vocabulary, etc. it generally takes years of study and practice.
