Question:
An egyptian friend of mine wants to come to Germany to learn the
language. Has anyone experience in what course to take, what school to
choose, what's the best way to learn it in a short while? Or any other
suggestions how to get to know the language.
Answer:
If your friend's sole purpose of going to Germany is to learn the language
then the better approach would be to learn the basics of German language in
Egypt first before actually going to Germany. There are excellent sources
like Berlitz or Goethe Institut in Cairo. I attended classes in Goethe
Institut back in the seventies two evenings a week for little more than
three years. I could communicate in German with pen pals after about six
months. Visiting Germany, Switzerland and Austria with German as the only
means of communication helped enhance my pronunciation greatly.
The parts that may be difficult for an Egyptian to learn may be the concept
of a neutral noun that is neither masculine nor feminine, the second object
(Dativ) and reflexive verbs which bear no similarity to Arabic language
structure. There is no short cut to master German that I know other than
having extended exposure and feeling the need to use the language after
learning the basics.
