what is the Irish government doing to bring it back?

Question: 1) How many speakers are there today of Eirsh (?) and how many were there in 1922 when Ireland became Independent? 2) Exactly what is the Irish government doing to bring it back? I seem to recall reading somewhere about a program to start teaching Gaelic to elementary school students so as to make 40 percent of Ireland Bilingual by 2025 or something to that effect. Can anyone help me out here? I haven't seen any figure from a source I consider reliable so I've decided to ask the Irish themselves

Answer: For the life of me I cannot understand why anyone could be bothered learning Irish. Even TnaG show a lot of the programming in English. I mean apart from all the grants and hand outs to stay in gaelteacht area's, what is the point.?

No whatever about someone living in Ireland choosing to learn Irish the mind just boggles at americans wanting to learn it......

In answer to the above every student has to "do Irish" until leaving cert, a very small number of these would be fluent or considered bilingual. I have yet to meet a student studying Irish by choice...

For the leaving Certificate ( age around 16-18 , I do not know the American equivelent , they seem to get a diploma for going to the right toilet in McDonalds anyway! ) English, Irish and at least one european language are required. Obviously it would be more practical to relace Irish with a "living" Europen language as a course of study..
