Do such tapes exist and where can we get Cassette/Video Tapes to Learn ENGLISH?

Question: I guess I want to ask the reverse of the ordinary question. I have a Japanese friend who wants to learn conversational English. I think he just needs more practice, having been through the usual english programs in school in Japan. Do such tapes exist and where can we get them? I am also thinking of giving him older more talkie type movies to watch like "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and maybe "North by Northwest" etc.

Answer: I bought a closed caption decoder to learn English. The only shortcoming is that it edits the dialog if the talk goes to fast. But other than that, I think it is worth the investment, specially when practically every video cassette tape comes with CC encoded in it. Most recorded broadcasting comes with CC as well.

Live broadcast does CC too, except there is a delay which makes it harder to match what is spoken and what is being shown on the screen. If you are relying on one medium only, that delay is fine. But if you are trying to match one with the other to learn the language, it bothers and strains you.

It is great for watching movie without waking anyone up, too.

It has no effect when I play Japanese video tapes. Is there Japanese CC?
