Question:
Does anyone know of where I can go to learn American Sign Language in the New
York City Area?
Answer:
I am MWest area, but have you checked the adult education classes?
Around here anyway, they usually have a fall and spring class,
different levels, depending on your previous exposure. The best
book, by the way, is the "Joy of Signing" by Lottie L. Riekehof.
There are others, but have found this one to be the best overall.
Having a partner take the lessons with you would be a great asset.
While my daughter was still home, I was able to keep up with most of
the signs and remember them due to signing with her frequently. I
have found now, not being around anyone who does sign has kept me out
of practice, and hence have forgotten a lot of what I had learned.
There is also a computer program that isn't too bad: "American Sign
Language Dictionary" by Martin L. A. Sternberg. It is self-paced,
with games and quizzes to help with the practice. I have found,
though, that the adult ed. classes help you to learn better...at
least it was so with me. You are able to know better if you are
doing the signs correctly or not.
