Question:
The discussions here on children learning languages make me curious.
Suppose you had a family where only English was spoken in the home, and
they had a young child. If the parents were to leave the TV on Spanish
channels most of the time (say, when the parents aren't watching their
regular shows), would the child learn Spanish from the TV?
Or does children's learning of language require interaction with and
active corrections from people who already speak the language?
If learning the language this way would not work, would the child at
least pick up the sounds of the language, and maybe some familiarity
with the structure of the language, that would help if that child later,
as a teen or adult, decided to try to learn that language?
Answer:
Well, I didn't learn German from watching LOTS of German cartoons when I was
a child, but anime is a valuable (though not the only one) source of
Japanese for me now.
