Question:
I'm looking into learning a new language, not sure which to start out with
yet but I do have a question on what type of system to use. I was looking
at the Rosetta Stone computer based system which, ignoring price, looks like
something I could work with but I'd also like something to listen to in my
car while driving to work. If I were to also get the Pimsleur tapes and use
them in the car would that mess me up on the computer program? I mean
messed up in that I would be trying to learn a new language using two
completely different methods. Any recomendations on learning the way I want
to? Should I just stick with one or the other and not try to maximize my
learning time to the cost of actually slowing my learning curve alot.
Answer:
From my point of veiw there is no harm to use different methods in
learing language, I think even it would be the best to make your
learning, so-called, multi-dimensional; TV, Softwares, Tapes,
Audiobooks, Stories... one should stir a flood of words into his head
from any reliable source
Pimsleur audios are very good, if you are learning a language about
which you know nothing. you can practice your pronounciation and alos
learn some basics. But, I never managed to listen to more than 15 audio
files. since, you need 30 minutes listening to learn 3 or 4 new words,
and this is a little boring for me. But I think, if one can go through
all the audios twice or even once, one will not feel uncomportable with
the that language any more.
