Question:
Sir Richard Burton is well know for knowing 25+ different languages and
dialects in his life time. Does anyone know the methods that he used to
learn these languages?
Or does anyone have any good methods learning a languages quickly. I know
the best way is to live into the host country. But that is not feasible at
the moment.
Would it not be great to be able to read philosophy in its orginal
languages.
Answer:
Yes!...It seems you would get a better understanding of
what they meant in the original language...so much is lost
in translation.
I think in Islam they say that a translation of the Koran
is not the Koran, but only an interpretation...and almost
a sacrilege to some.
I would love to go back and experience the whole
culture where the philosophy was developed....
or at least see the country and how it might have
affected their view of the world and their philosophy...
the vast "timeless" spaces of India ...
The rich, warm lands of Greece...
The cold, forbidding Norse seas....
It seems hard to isolate the philosophy from
the culture and environment that spawned it.
Don't know particular techniques for learning
languages, though...hoping someone does! :-)
