Question:
I am presently doing research for an organization that advocates for second
language programs especially in the public school system here in Canada. I am
looking for some advice and ideas from teachers and parents about this issue.
It would be great if you could take some time to email me answers to a few
questions.
1. Would you want your child/student to enter an immersion program if he/she
has a learning disability?
2. Why?
3. What are your fears about this?
4. What would be the specific challenges of this child in an immersion
program?
5. What kind of support would be required to make success possible?
Answer:
NO !!!
Well, MY LD kids are dyslexic - your term "learning disability" is so broad as to
make this questionnaire pretty useless,
Dyslexics have problems processing written language
He would simple flunk
Quite a bit - we all had lots of trouble with ENGLISH.
I took THREE years of first year French. When I started, I had just come back
from a summer in France, could speak limited but passable French, and had a better
accent than the teacher. The only reason I finally passed was the final exam had
a passage to translate from "Le Petite Prince" - It had been one of may favorites
as a child when my parents read it to me, so I knew the English almost by heart.
The dyslexics in my family has managed to flunk French, German, Hebrew, Russian,
Aramaic, Latin, Greek, Spanish, Provençal, Rashi, plus probably a few more I don't
know about.
