Question:
I am teaching English at a junior high school in Aichi Ken, Japan and have
been
asked to get as many answers to this question as possible so my students
could see why they need to study English.
Answer:
How about because right now, Japan is in a recession. Jobs are tight,
but--especially in larger urban areas--those with good English skills
are still in high demand. One of my students from Iwate Ken ended up
coming to the states, attending a crash-course ESL program to prepare
her for college, getting her degree here in the states, and returning to
her home town to work for the city developing international-relations
and economic-development type things. She's been able to find a
satisfying job more easily because of her English proficiency. And she's
also been able to travel extensively & reports that she has more
confidence in her work both here & abroad.
A second language truly opens up another world: travel, friendships,
cultural interests, etc.
Or (as was the case with one of my high school students who now lives in
New York City (and has a nose ring, ha!)), so they can understand the
words to "Lola" by the Kinks! (I know, I know, can you believe it?!)
Or, how about so they can actually understand the cuss words in the
movies they watch, rather than just reading the subtitles!
(I was in Iwate for nearly 3 years. How long have you been in
Aichi-ken?)
