Question:
I live in a town with a high population of Hispanics. Predominatly Mexican.
I don't have a problem with that.
What I DO have a problem with is those that don't speak English! They want
to reap the benefits of living in America, and that's fine with me. But why
must everything all over town be in English AND Spanish?
In our school system we have what's called ESL classes. "English as a Second
Language". My children, who were born in the USA and who speak English, don't
have text books or supplies because there isn't any money for that. BUT there
IS money to hire bilingual teachers and pay for ESL classes! That upsets me!
And all memos from the school are sent home in English AND Spanish. I'm a hard
working tax payer... and this infuriates me!
I've worked in the schools, and I've been inside those classrooms. It seems
that they are enabling the Hispanic children to continue to speak Spanish,
rather than actually teaching them English!
I went shopping today and I must have been the only caucasion in the store.
The cashiers were Mexican, and were so busy chatting with their customers that
the long lines weren't moving! (Of course they were conversing in Spanish).
And then I noticed that most of the signs hanging up in the store were in
Spanish, as well. Children were running all over the store, and parents were
yelling at them.... yes, in Spanish. I didn't even feel like I was in America
anymore!
When my grandparents migrated to the USA from Italy they HAD to learn the
language to survive. They didn't have special programs to help them out. So
why is it so hard for the Hispanics to learn the language? BECAUSE THEY DON'T
HAVE TO ! We have conformed to meet their needs!
Ya know.... I really am ashamed for sounding so predjudiced. But when I
think about it I feel it's honestly the fault of the Hispanics for making me
feel this way. Show some respect for this country, and for the citizens
here.... LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH, por favor !
Spanish is a beautiful language, and I took it for 4 years back in school.
However, I want that to be an option for my children... and not something they
will be forced into doing in order to get a job.
Answer:
The primary blame lies with the liberal ruling class of the past 40
years which has provided guvamint notices in Spanish and in general
has done nothing to encourage Hispanics to spicka da English.
Now of course pvt. industry is doing the same thing, football games in
Spanish, etc.
Even when we all speak the same language, there's a lot of
misunderstanding and miscommunication, and this will worsen with
multiple languages.
A few years ago, some politicians, including an Asian-American from
Hawaii and at least one Hispanic were trying to establish English as
the national language, but this movement apparently fell by the
wayside.
