Question:
Does anyone have any suggestions of picture books that can be used to
help ESL students read? I am a librarian and would like to increase my
collection of picture books that would entice ESL students.
Answer:
I know very little about primary teaching materials, but some of the
private schools where I live use the Oxford Reading Tree. It's intended
(I think) for native speakers, but the lower levels are basically
flashcards with pictures, and a simple story that you read. Perhaps
they have individual books that the students can work through on their
own.
Also, the main publishers all have easy readers: simplified English
story books. The Oxford Bookworms Starters, as I remember, are
basically half to three-quarter-page illustrations with very simple
text. The advantage of these is that the stories are more adult, if
your students are above primary age.
Any other suggestions, anyone
