Question:
How does a person acquire certification for teaching of ESL
without knowing English grammar, punctuation and spelling?
Answer:
Do you mean in a formal context, or a quick note on the internet? I
think the two are completely different forums. When I get in a
website, I try to respond to as many articles as I can. This will
keep the group running. So I guess it's a choice - keep the group and
a great exchange of ideas flowing or slow down the responses and let
the group die due to pedantic scolding.
In addition, I don't think this is the place to prove your a better
teacher or writer than the next person. I want ideas to flow and they
will stop if people are writing out of fear because someone is
scrutinizing their articles. When I correct my students writing, I
make note of a few grammatical mistakes. I do not plaster them with
red ink because from my experience they tend to write very little.
There is a place for grammatical monitoring, but this is not the
forum. And I don't think you can judge a person's writing abilities
from a website message.
I hope this is the last time anyone has to respond to messages like
this.
