what's the difference between these two sentences?

Question: and thank you for your help in advance. I am an ESL student. I was doing some exercise and came to the following problem.

Fill in the correct form for the verb in the following sentence.

It_____(snow) when I was at work.

It seems that both of "It was snowing when I was at work" and "It snowed when I was at work" would work. Am I right? or Are there subtle differences between these two sentences?

Answer: It snowed when I was at work: is a fixed past event - some time when I was at work it snowed. One flake would be enough.

It was showing when I was at work: has a longer time implication - it's not quite saying that it snowed all the time I was at work, but it's closer to that than the first answer.

Both are good English.
