Question:
don't know if this OT for the internet but I thinkn it is a fun
discussion. If you were given a time machine and allowed to travel to
any time period you want and experience life in said time period,
which would you pick. The only caveat is you can't pick a time and
location which would make you part of a signficant historical event.
E.G. You can't become a part of the American Revolution or WWII, etc.
Personally I have a possibly strange desire to experience life in
Japan (as an American expat) during the height of the bubble economy
which would be between 1984-1987. I have this desire for several
reasons.
1. I was born in 1980 and have always been into 80s pop culture and
subculture despite the fact the clothes were pretty silly looking. I
have alwatys wondered what the 80s were like as a twenty-something.
2. I am an anime fan and most of my favorite anime came out between
1980-1994.
3. I taught in Japan between 2002-2003. Any ESL teacher in Japan is
destined to hear grass is grenner stories about what it was like to be
an ESL teacher during the bubble years. If you work in a major city
like I did you would probably run into old timers who would tell you
stories about signficantly higer pay and lots of perks and bounses. It
was also apparently easy to step off a plane and get a job. I want to
see if these stories are true.
Answer:
I would prefer to go forward (as someone once said 'there's no going
back') to 3000 AD, or 4000 AD, or whenever we get the 'live forever'
medicare, &/or uploaded brains.
Not because I particularly want to live forever, but it would be nice to
see a larger slice of the universe (first hand), and I think the current
human life span renders that impossible. Heck, I ain't even got time to
see all the good bits of the UK, never mind Planet Earth, or the Milky
Way, or the local cluster, or ...
