Question:
I am looking for recourses on ESL / EFL curriculum, or sample
curriculums. I am trying to develop a curriculum, including all
classes, and I need some ideas. really not experienced with
curriculum design at all.
Answer:
Is there a book store that stocks ESL/EFL books where you live? If
so, I suggest that you go there and look for the books on curriculum
design meant for ESL/EFL teachers.
The next best thing is to type "ESL curriculum design" in a search
window and check out what's available on the Web. Lots.
After that, you can check out the teacher's manual for textbooks in
each area of ESL/EFL teaching. They usually have an entire curriculum
designed for that specific text.
Next, search the publishers' websites for helpful suggestions about
the topic.
After that, go to the nearest junior college or university in your
area and ask the teachers there if they have anything you can use.
Finally, find some working ESL/EFL teachers to talk to about the
topic. They'll have lots of advice to offer. Maybe even some of their
own curriculum materials.
The problem with getting into curriculum design is that what you must
design depends not only on the subject of the class and the level of
the students, but also on whom you're teaching. A curriculum good for
ESL students based in New York City or Los Angeles, London or
Cambridge, Toronto or Ottowa, Sydney or Melbourne, etc, would not
work for students studying EFL in Taipei or Tokyo.
If you have no ESL/EFL experience, what makes you think that you will
be able to design a worthwhile curriculum? Have you designed
curricula in other fields?
