Question:
Does anyone have, or have information about, institutions that give course
credit toward graduation for ESL courses? A brief description would be
appreciated. Does anyone treat ESL students the same as American-language
students learning foreign languages?
Answer:
At the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), there is a set of ESL
classes for undergraduate international students and a different set for
grad students. Students are placed into a class through a placement test
(writing sample). Grad students can test out of the classes, but
undergrads can only test out of lower level classes, and must take 115 (the
highest class). The students get credit for this class -- it is a partial
fulfillment of the rhetoric requirement here. Unfortunately, if a grad
student has to take ESL classes, no credit is given. There are, however,
advanced ESL writing classes for which they can get credit.
The grad sequence courses will have new numbers next fall (ESL 111 will be
ESL 401, for example) and I *think* students will get credit for these
classes, though they won't fill any requirements other than ESL
requirements.
