Question: I was just wondering if it would be a good idea to have ESL students view a television program (30 min. max.) in English and have them answer a questionnaire afterwards. The questions would verify if they really understood the program.

Concerning the programs; would popular sitcoms be appropriate (eg. Seinfeld, Home improvement)? Or is it best to stick with documentary programs?

Answer: CNN has a 15-minute, commercial free news program originating daily (5 days a week) from New York. Along with this free-to-tape for classroom use is an on-line lesson plan which is reproducible for classroom use. It's great for ESL classes. Each day has a different focus and you can pick and choose what your particular students would be interested in. I don't have the 800 number available at this moment, but do consider this resource for TV in the ESL classroom
