Question: Does anyone have any good links to easy to understand resources about articles, eg. a, an, the (), to help with teaching ESL

Answer: I think, though, that at least a few sensible things can be said about English articles (even if no one has managed to figure them out completely).

For example:

Articles are often influenced by news value. A noun representing new information is somewhat more likely to carry an indefinite article -- whereas a noun representing something that has already been brought up is a bit more likely to carry a definite article.

Articles are also influenced by whether a noun is "countable" or not. This may not help ESL students much, though, since many of them experience lots of trouble with the count/mass distinction.
