Question:
Writing is one of the really good methods to test how students are
good at English, because you can check students' grammar, vocabulary,
and construction of a sentence with their writing. Usually Asian
students ,such as Koreans and Japanese, because their education
focuses on grammar, vocabulary, and reading, are considered to be
rather good at writing. They use extended vocabulary and relatively
accurate use of English. But I think our classes are not well
organized for students' writing skill. How do you handle teaching
writing in your class ? -especially in an EFL course. Does anyone have
any good way to organize a writing class? I want to know what is a
good way to teach writing skills especially constructing an English
sentence and using vocabulary which is easily ignored to teach in EFL
education.
Answer:
.. I'm now studying about english language education in Chonnam
National University of korea and have a great interesting of your
problem as a teacher in efl situation.
I have some experiences with a professor who led a class called
english writing practice. In fact the class was designed for freshmen
but some juniors and sophomores were also registered so my professor
looked like having a little trouble about handling the class. But
she decided to teach several common things in writing an essay(topic
sentences, organiging paragraph, proper length, some suggestions) to
all of us, and then
she made us writing an essay with only one title. When examining our
outputs, she applied some relative norms to each students according to
one's level.
During class hours she often grouped peers and let them talk in
english about their thought processes and it seemed really to help
most students develop logics and elaborate their writing skills.
As a result, because it's really up to one's conscious effort to
develop one's writing skill, a teacher may have to apply some relative
norms to each students and I think it's also important to make
students think about their thought process and communicate with mates.
