Question:
Which are the best places and the worst to master english within the USA?
Are there so many 'latinos' that they really represent a concern for spanish
speaking guys'n'gals who pretend to learn english there?
Answer:
Somebody suggested that that was a problem in California,
but I think it's only Southern California where that's an
issue. San Francisco is effectively monolingual; even in
Chinatown everyone is fluent in English. You have to go as
far as Palo Alto before there's a hint of Spanish influence,
and even there English is the majority language, and it's
a huge majority. By the time you hit the Spanish-only
regions you're well out of the Bay Area.
If you want pure monolingual US English, the sort of English
where a non-native speaker would be run out of town, try
the midwest. Or, if you happen to be in northern California,
duck across the bay to either Berkeley or Marin County,
where the midwest accents outnumber the Californian accents.
You need to be aware that the Berkeley accent is a mélange
of practically everything from Japanese to darkest Tennessee.
