Question:
I have a Korean friend who is presently studying English in London, and
wants a good book on pronunciation...particularly with respect to word
stress and emphasis. I, of course, have gone the Amazon route, but only
really found books that center on American English. Any suggestions?
Answer:
English Pronouncing Dictionary with CD-ROM
Daniel Jones, Peter Roach (Editor), James Hartman (Editor), Jane
Setter (Editor)
Cambridge University Press; ISBN: 0521017130
Amazon.co.uk synopsis states: British and American pronunciations are
shown for every word, using the International Phonetic Alphabet, ...
The only pronunciation dictionary available with a CD-ROM which
contains recordings of every headword, advanced searching facilities,
the ability to record and evaluate the user's own pronunciation, and a
wealth of interactive pronunciation exercises.
The following might also be useful:
Concise Pronouncing Dictionary of British and American English
J Windsor Lewis Oxford University Press, ISBN: 0194311236
More academic might be:
Gimson's Pronunciation of English
Alan Cruttenden (Editor)
Arnold; ISBN: 0340759720
Amazon.co.uk's synopsis states: Since its publication, Gimson's
Pronunciation of English has been acknowledged as the standard
description, both comprehensive and accessible, of spoken English: an
essential book for anyone studying the sounds and tones of English or
teaching English pronunciation and intonation to non-native speakers.
... The chapter on 'Standard and regional accents' has been expanded
to accurately reflect changes in attitude to language standards, with
a particular focus on recently recognised variation within a wider
Received Pronunciation, such as Estuary English. The new edition
continues to provide valuable guidance on how to teach the sounds of
English to foreign learners, for whom a new subsection on pronouncing
dictionaries has been added. In addition, many other sections have
been substantially rewritten, including those on the syllable and
phonotactics and on word accent, with new spectrograms added.
In fact if you put: english language; pronunciation (with the
semicolon) into the search box at amazon.co.uk you will get many
helpful suggestions, the majority of those for English language seem
to be for British English.
