Question:
I have problems in teaching English pronunciation to my
students.Could anyone provide me with some helpful tips or activities
that would facilitate the task for me
Answer:
I have taught English pronunciation classes, so I can give you a few
tips.
Part of the success in teaching proper pronunciation (probably of any
language) depends on the ages of the students. The younger they are,
the easier it will be for them to learn proper pronunciation. Once a
person reaches puberty, it is far more difficult to change an accent.
Another factor is the native language of the teacher and how strong of
an accent the teacher has. The teacher of a foreign language must
make sure that their pronunciation is accurate in order to increase
the success of the students. One thing that I always stress to my
students, when I teach classes, is that it is far more important to be
intelligible than it is to eliminate an accent. An accent is a part of
who you are and can be quite charming. What is much more important is
that people can understand what you are saying and equally important
in the learning of any language that you understand what is being said
to you.
There are many fine software, video or audio programs that help teach
pronunciation. I would tend to encourage computer-based software,
videos or dvds because you can hear and see what the people are
teaching.
Lots of luck with your endeavor. If you would like any further
information, please let me know.
