Question:
The abundance of phrasal verbs and prepositional idioms seems to be an
unique feature of English. Do other indo-european languages also have
phrasal verbs and prepositional idioms, and as rich as they are in English?
Answer:
I can only speak for the German language, but, yes, we do
have lots of phrasal verbs in German, only we put the
adverbial or prepositional phrase at the beginning of the
verb (in the infinitive at least). For example, the English
'add *up*' is '*zusammen*zaehlen' in German, 'fall *apart*'
is '*auseinander*fallen', 'give *up*' is '*auf*geben'
