Question:
The subject says it all. Does anyone know of any english-language
primary schools in Florence? We are thinking of living there for one
year and wish to send our 8 and 11 yr olds to school.
Answer:
I suggest trying to send your kids to an Italian school. I worked in the
Netherlands for a year when my kids were 10 and 12 and I sent them to a
Dutch school. Within a very short time, they were conversant in Dutch
and altogether it was a wonderful cultural experience for them. I
brought along some books for my older daughter to keep her up to date in
her American courses, but it was kind of futile and really it was not
much of a setback in any case. (She just finished a PhD program at Yale,
so you can see it didn't do her any harm.)
Italian would also be easier to keep up than Dutch. My kids
unfortunately forgot all their Dutch in a short time, as there was
little possibility of maintaining it. However, I think it certainly
helped them in foreign language studies later. Probably their brains
learned how to learn languages, because both excelled in languages in
high school and university
