Question:
I am interested in improving upon my grammar. I'm a 17 year old, aspiring
writer, and, for some reason, I have never had a formal lesson in grammar,
in all of my English classes. If you could suggest a great grammar and
usage, self-help book, I would appreciate it greatly. Also, please tell me
why this book shines among the other, countless writing improvement books
Answer:
Although I sense a bit of sarcasm in your writing, I'll answer your
question anyway; it is possible that I was not as clear as I could have
been, in my posting.
In no way do I feel that my English teachers were incompetent or the
English courses I took not sufficient, yet it seems that the preferred
method of my teachers for teaching grammar and usage was to read writing
pieces and comment on them, correcting grammar mistakes- no truly formal
lessons were given. I learned a great deal from this method (I am proud of
my current writing abilities), but I find that I lack some writing and
grammar "terminology" words that should be an existent facet of my writing
knowledge. As a result, I feel there are holes in my education, although
there may not be; so, I would like to teach grammar to myself, in a formal
matter (hence, asking for a good book). I think it is necessary for every
writer to develop a mastery of the English language, and that includes these
words, no matter how arbitrary they are.
