Question:
What's the feeling on using workbooks in a high school English class?
It seems that English should be taught with literature, primarily, and
that workbooks dumbdown
Answer:
I can't resist the temptation to put in a plug for my new grammar series
called The Stewart English Program, published by Educators Publishing
Service (the same folks who bring you Wordly Wise). This is a three-book
series that spans grades seven through twelve, and its unique feature is
that it truly makes the link between grammar and writing. Virtually every
exercise in these workbooks demands a written response from the
student--not a mere identification or underlining--and the students are
graded on both accuracy and creativity. For those of you who might remember
the famous Christensen Rhetoric Program, Book 3 in the series is my
revision of that outstanding work. If you have been frustrated and
dissatisfied with the traditional grammar approach (Warriner's?), I
encourage you to take a look.
