Question:
Just a rush question since I'm perching on the edge of buying a ThinkPad,
possibly as early as Saturday. Hopefully something in the 1465 series...
If I get the Japanese version of Microsoft Word, does the English grammar
checker exist? I'm pretty sure it wasn't enabled by default, at least for
Japanese Word 98, but not sure if it was somewhere on the CD waiting to be
installed. Or maybe it's part of the latest version, whatever that's
numbered. When I posted this question elsewhere, there was some confusion
about the spelling checker versus the grammar checker--I know the spelling
checker was intrusively available in the Japanese versions, but the grammar
checker was not, though it's possible someone in the store I worked at had
tweaked the settings to disable it.
If the grammar checker doesn't come with the Japanese version, then I should
buy an unbundled machine and get English Word separately, nuisance though it
be. But come to think of it, I can probably dig up an old English version at
a discount, and it would probably suit my purposes. Planning to spend some
time in Akihabara.
Answer:
My wife's Sony Vaio came with Office 2000 (J) preinstalled. Yes,
Japanese Word includes the English grammar and spell checkers and, yes,
they are both turned on by default.
