Question:
Is there a book that is considered the "standard" for English
grammer and style? Is there one that most colleges use, or
does it completely vary?
Is there a book that anyone can recommend to me for English
usage and style?
Answer:
The University of Chicago Manual of Style" is consistently employed
in the academic world.
I also highly recommend "Words into Type," 3rd edition, 1974, Prentice-
Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Although a couple of decades
old (would love to see a 4th edition), the grammar is thorough and
well-presented, with excellent sections on pitfalls, words often
missused, even correct prepostion usage. I must warn that it IS
gramatically conservative.
Other copyeditors often say, "The grammar reference I REALLY find
most helpful is 'Words into Type.'"
If above contains misspellings, grammar glitches only means life
is not fair and English even less so.
