Any goog book on English grammar?

Question: was just wondering if anyone knows any good English grammar book. The reason I ask about this is that at some point the text books that are generally available in the stores become just not enough and do not cover all sorts of the grammar topics like Subjunctive Mood (except for IF conditions that are generally covered pretty well) or like Gerund. I found most of the guides are oriented towards the entry level students and I seem can not find anything to advance my knowledge of the language

Answer: A much used and generally admired standard reference book for foreign learners is Michael Swan's "Practical English Usage". Greenbaum's "The Oxford English Grammar" (Greenbaum) is the best short (650 pages) analytic grammar, though he has liitle time for "gerund" ("the -ing participle, sometimes in this context called the gerund" is IIRC his sole mention of the topic, concerning the construction "She disliked his staying out so late"). I expect other people will recommend usage books taking a more prescriptive line and using more traditional terminology
