Question:
Since I've embarked on the writing of a novel, I've discovered how
deficient I am in applying proper grammar and punctuation to my
work. I have a college grammar text, ( you know the one that we
all had to get for our freshman English classes ) but it doesn't
give much guidance on grammar rules and punctuation for dialog.
Can anyone recommend a good guide to style, grammar, and punctua-
tion for a novice fiction writer? One the included insights into
the use of things such tense and voice, in the context of enhancing
one's storytelling, would be most helpful.
Answer:
I like MRS. THISTLEBOTTOM'S HOBGOBLINS from Thomas Bernstein. Very
un-dogmatic and fun to read. In fact, anything by Bernstein is usually worth
reading, but this book not only discusses good grammar, but also discusses
all of the stuff you're taught taht is either wrong or blown out of
proportion
