Question:
was just wondering if anyone would mind posting his/her most
successful lesson
plans on the internet. I have been working with the same student for 6
months, and I
am interested in finding out the different teaching methods out there so I
can avoid falling into
monotony. I would greatly appreciate learning from your personal
experiences of what worked
and what didn't!
Answer:
No, he is not a special needs student. Tony is an incredible adult student.
His english is at an advanced beginner level; he can hold sophisticated
conversations
with detailed vocabulary yet incorrectly conjugate the most basic verbs.
Right now,
we are trying to establish a firm base in basic verb forms and grammar.
As far as lesson planning, I thought that the internet would be a great place
for teachers to exchange ideas on what has worked and what has flopped in the
classroom. Please excuse my naivete, but I have only been tutoring for 6 months
and am interested in improving my lessons and would like to learn from
other people's
experiences.
Here's a lesson that went especially well for me recently:
When I met Tony last Wednesday, I had a lesson planned already on Holiday
traditions,
but when he asked me at the beginning of the lesson what the word weather
meant I
realized that we'd be working on something totally different...
Basically, as banal as it sounds, we talked about weather. Luckily I had
brought the newspaper with
me and we started with the weather map. We talked about the weather in
different cities in
America and around the world. He told me what the weather was like in
Mexico today and
yesterday and will be like tomorrow (we got to practice some of the verb
forms he has trouble with).
As trivial as it seems, talking about the weather is an important part of
conversing in english. How
many times have you talked to someone you've just met about the weather?
Also, it allowed the
perfect segway to broach other topics, like geography, and introduced him
to tons of new
vocabulary.
Well, I hope this starts some discussion. I am open to critique, but
please be kind! I am
just a volunteer trying to do the best on I can on only 18 hours of training
