Question:
It never would have occurred to me to offer an English
grammar to English native speakers to help them learn another language, but
perhaps it is a good idea.
Broadly speaking, what school of English grammar does the author endorse?
Traditional, or transformational?
Answer:
That's grammar as in descriptive, as opposed to theoretical or
explanatory. By the way, I agree with Charles; it's a pretty useful
little book, perhaps even for beginning linguistics (as opposed to
language) students who've forgotten more than they ever knew about
their high-school grammar. It's not going to replace the Japan Times
books or Shibatani, but I don't think it was intended to.
