Question:
I know English is Official in Puerto Rico, but how many
people actually speak it? I know I'd have to "upgrade" my sad
Spanish, but would I have any trouble, say, finding plenty of
English-language books in libraries in San Juan?
And what about "Spanish as a second language" courses?
Answer:
Oh, you will find plenty of books in English and there are ESL courses.
One thing is what you find in papers and another what you will find on the
streets. Remember, you will have to buy the book from someone and fill your
car's tank in a gas station and the radio and TV are in spanish. Of course,
there is cable, if it works. There is also a bunch of Anglos wannabe that
think they know English, enjoy them, lol.
But the majority of the people is good and many of them speak or understand
English and will be more than glad to help.
I haven't met more than 5 Anglos in all Puerto Rico that made the transition
and stayed. One is a white Jamaican and another is the wife of a mail man
who's devotion to religion made her go to where her husband went. Old
fashion type of woman. The other three are Robert Rabin, an independentista
living in Vieques, Vance Thomas, president of the Independence Youth
Movement in the Independence Party, and I can't remember the fifth one.
I know lots of people all over Puerto Rico. But, enjoy it, it is a
different culture and a very happy one, family oriented. Get ready for the
time of your life.
