Question:
Does anyone know of any, preferably free, english courses for
non-english speakers?
I am trying to locate resources in New York City for a Turkish friend
whose english is very limited, as are his resources.
Answer:
Embassy CES (Center for English Studies) offers free courses taught by teachers
in training. Call 212.629.7300 and ask for info on the free courses taught by
CELTA trainees. I teach at Embassy and also volunteer at The International
Center which is not free but very reasonable and worth checking out if your
friend is here for an extended stay. I believe you need to be beyond beginner
level for membership, so this might not be the place to start. They're at 50
West 23rd Street, 212.255.9555. (I've actually been a "grammar partner" there
for a student from Turkey for the last few months.) Some of the less expensive
language schools I affectionately refer to as The Subway Schools because they
all advertise on the subway: Zoni, American Langauge Communication Center
(ALCC), and New York Language Center, all have branches in Manhattan as well as
the boroughs. Tuition is less, classes are larger. I know a non-native
speaker who loves a program at Hunter College -- I believe he's there on a
scholarship. Feel free to e-mail me if I can answer any questions
