Question:
I am an Elementary English Teacher in Nan Tou County.
This semester one native American is assigned as associated teacher with me.
She teaches most of the class, whereas I correct student’s homework.
This is a preliminary trial for next semester, since there will be 600 native English teachers assigned to different schools in the whole island.
In our school, there is a tough student in the fifth grade class.
He has never taken seriously in studying English, neither in other courses.
He used to making noise and tried to interrupt teaching during the class.
Last semester I always allowed him to do whatever he liked to do during my English class.
But, my associated native American seems not to be aware of his problem and immediately confront with the student during the class.
Their battle has just begun and I already smell the dynamite today.
In seeing this situation, I have to admit I did not pay attention to this student before as native American does now.
For this instance, I have learned a lesson in how to teach elementary student.
It seems to me that I need more courage to confront with tough students and make them study English seriously.
Answer:
I am not a teacher, but many years ago while at school I once was a
student like the one you have in your class. However my situation was
different--I did not like the English teacher we had in school. I refused to
listen to her and controverted her when I did not agree with her. At the end
she did like what you do to me, she allowed me to do things I like.
But I don't think it is a good way, nor even something a good teacher should
do to leave a student alone. Remember, you are teaching in a public school
and it is his right to be educated as well as all the other kids. I think
maybe you should ask other teacher in behavioral science field to help you
teach this kid or maybe you can try some games in the class to interest him.
I know there's a book called "Teaching English to the kids in Asia--with
interesting games " maybe you should get one and read.
Teaching English to kids is different to teaching the adults. Because as to
a child, you are not just teaching him English, you are educating him as
well.
