Question:
Does anyone use text adventures (or interactive fiction, to be politically
correct) or know about text adventures being used in second or foreign
language education? I know it has been done in the past and there are even
a number of games that have been specifically written for this purpose,
but what I want to know is if anything of this sort is still going on.
I would also be interested in hearing about other types of adventure games
being used for the same purpose, although that is not my main interest.
The reason that I ask is that I have been assigned to write an article on
the subject, to appear in a few months in a new on-line magazine called
InterLingo.
Answer:
might want to try and run that word in a search engine...
Speaking from experience, I think text-based games work (MUDS..) I used to
play (now I run) a game based in Montréal, Québec, Canada. Many Francophones
play this game and usually conversed in French, and in English to the
Americans/English Speaking Canadians.
The game, however, was never meant to be educational. Just plain fun. But I
took the opportunity to not only understand the slang of Canadian French but
the 'standard' grammar the older crowd used. (Mostly 20-somethings play this
game..)
