Question:
I am a young designer from NE England, UK.
I have completed several paid freelance projects for clients and am building
a good reputation as a freelance graphic designer [I hope ;)]
I have a good traditional background in art, and feel quite competent with
that. Now I was thinking about studying Fine Art at Edinburgh University
(Scotland) - lovely vibrant city, and a reputable university.
However, I am now considering taking a languages degree (an MA honours for
the English ppl here (a second-level degree)), like in French and Italian.
I'm still not sure which career I want, although I am considering art
direction for an advertising agency or the like, possibly in film.
Will a languages degree help me here? I know that for most design jobs, the
portfolio comes first and degrees are less important, any advice here?
Anyone here done a languages degree? Any experiences?
Answer:
Well, I dont have a language degree, I did have to take 4
semesters (about 2 years) of a foreign language for my Studio
Art BA (I took French, although I found out later that I
could have taken American Sign. Oh well.)
Has it helped me at all? Nope....I dont remember most of it,
and I was never very good at French to begin with.
