Question:
Has anyone had experience with CD-Roms for learning Japanese? I'm
thinking of working with Rosetta Stone, and wondered if it's a good
system. I've also been making my way through the Pimsleur tapes. In
addition, I'd be grateful for any tips on what to look for in selecting
a Japanese language tutor for some one-on-one conversation and drill. If
there are any other language materials you like I'd be interested in
that as well.
Answer:
I was once quite keen on Computer Aided Learning/Instruction/Teaching but
have changed my mind. The work involved in producing CAL is prohibitive.
Tools such as flash cards can be useful.
I bought the Rosetta Stone Japanese Explorer, which I believe is a cheaper
version. It is absolute rubbish. Don't waste your time or money.
It seems to be a universal course which has been translated into Japanese.
One of the very early lessons involves various things jumping. It uses the
present continuative (????) form of the verb (I mean te-form iru/imasu)
before other forms. Japanese uses several different words for jumping,
jumping over, jumping down etc.
I do use it occasionally, but it is nothing other than a useful distraction.
I doubt the full version is any better. If you can't get to use it first,
don't risk the money. I would be interested in one of the teachers amongst
us if they have any positive experience
