It is increasingly being realized that Chinese (Mandarin rather) is an
important language because of the sheer number og Chinese people and
the growth of the Chinese economy. A few schools in the Nordic
countries now have Mandarin on their curricula. But I couldn't tell you
how many non-Chinese are learning Mandarin.
I doubt that one could learn Mandarin without staying in China among
Mandarin speakers. Well, you could if you used interactive audio-visual
computerbased teaching programs. But no educational establishments do
that because it makes teachers superfluous.
