Question:
The language teaching that I have experienced at school has always
seemed very inefficient to me (and not only because of myself ;-)
Let us take French as an example. As many other Danes I have learned
French for 3 years at school ("gymnasium"). I recall visiting Paris at
the end of these three years with the French class. What we had
learned could be used in restaurants and shops, and for understanding
basic texts. But not really for conversation, and barely for
understanding normal spoken French (for example a French movie). I
guess that living for 3 months in France, would have brought more than
these 3 years of inefficient traditional learning.
What is the best way to learn a language?
(I have heard that the best way is to fall in love with a speaker of
the language :-)
How is the Internet being used for language learning?
Answer:
The "age issue" was also the reason why in the state of North Rhine
Westphalia, Germany, children will start learning English at school at
the age of eight: As of mid-2003 every third grade schoolkid will have
two hours per week. While this is far from total immersion , it might
be a good way of getting familiar with the language in a somewhat
playful (and fun) way .
