Question:
I have noted that there are numerous learn Spanish fast...course on tape etc,
each claiming to be the one the diplomats use, otr the governemnt uses, or
the military uses, etc etcx. Anyone have suggestions on what are the best means
available for picking up some useable
language skills for visitors withour commiting one self to a massive education
effort??
Answer:
I bought a set of the "Learn in your Car" series last November because
I was driving about 2 hours a day. I listened to them fairly
regularly and have gotten to the point where I can follow a
conversation somewhat. I've sampled several others. The Berlitz
system I think would develop better listening comprehension
but has a more limited vocabulary and grammar. I have since then
taken to listening to the local Spanish radio stations and also
a medium level conversation tape all in Spanish. My ability
to comprehend is slowly growing.
The advantage to the "Learn in your Car" and the Berlitz tapes
is that they are almost all oral. Many of the other systems
come with workbooks. For me, all my spare time was in the car
so learning without a workbook was important. I did buy a
Spanish workbook, a dictionary, and an introductory reader,
though. I use them in odd moments to shore up my slowly
growing skills. Don't know how I'd fare if you dropped
me down in Caracas. I'm sure I'd be asking everyone to
speak more slowly, though
