Question:
I have been experimenting with a new (to me) approach with beginning L2 kids.
What do you think of and what does your research show regarding:
Starting with Kindergarten children, you teach them their basic
instructional content (in English) via the sheltered, realia centered, TPR,
etc. etc. approach. Mix in quite a bit of ESL teaching and give lots of
opportunity to hear, understand and respond back.
You do the same for grades 1 and two, using more and more objects,
pictures, drawings, etc. to get your subject matter across.
At the end of the time I see improvement in both oral English and in
content learning as compared to the kids I used to teach just ESL while
they were taking content in L1 during those early years.
I am pretty sure it doesn't work when you get them at an older age, but I
see some possibilities at the beginning of school.
What do you think?
Answer:
Are you familiar with the Foresee approach to integrating language and
content learning? It's an extension and modification of CALLA and can be
quite effective for the elementary level and even secondary. It was
developed by Richard Kidd, of the University of Manitoba and Brenda
Marqueson
